Know which roof edge has failed

Ridge tiles run along the peak where two roof slopes meet. Verges sit at the sloping side edges. The names are often mixed up, but the repair needs can differ. We inspect loose, cracked or displaced ridge pieces, along with worn verge mortar and damaged edge details. The right method depends on the tile condition, bedding, fixings and adjacent covering. A sound tile may be suitable for refixing, while a cracked component needs replacement. We explain which area has failed and how the repair will tie back into the surrounding roof.

Secure the line and remove unstable material

Loose material shouldn't be sealed over and left to move again. We remove unstable bedding or failed parts as needed, prepare the repair area and refix or replace the affected components. The finished peak or edge is checked for alignment and secure weathering, including nearby tiles that may have been disturbed. Ridge tile work also includes a free gutter clean, clearing the channels after the repair. It is a useful extra for rainwater flow and means loose debris from the roof isn't left sitting in the gutter below.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a ridge and a verge?

The ridge is the horizontal or angled line along the roof peak. The verge is the sloping outer edge at a gable. Both are exposed to weather, but their tiles, mortar and fixing details are arranged differently.

Can a loose ridge tile be refixed?

It may be reusable if the tile itself remains sound. We check the bedding, fixings and nearby covering before deciding. Cracked pieces or extensively failed material may need replacement rather than being put back into an unstable detail.

Is the free gutter clean included with verge work?

The confirmed free gutter clean applies to ridge tile work. If your enquiry concerns a verge, we can still assess any gutter cleaning needed and make the scope clear in the quote before work starts.
